My friend Scott pointed me to the much anticipated announcement from Amazon. The Kindle Fire is definitely a competitor to the iPad, and any other tablet. It runs Android 2.3, has apps and access to a media store similar to iTunes.
The really impressive spec is the price, this thing is under $200 ($199). True it lacks a lot of the hardware you might want in a tablet, check the comparison here. There is no camera (front or back facing), there is no GPS, no Bluetooth and no access to cellular networks. What does it have? Access to an app store (Android, remember?), a very nice color display and WIFI.
I don’t know if this thing is an “iPad Killer” but it is an interesting device. I am intrigued.
Oh ya, not available in Canada…
